The Sinai Peninsula, Egypt’s little piece of heaven!

In every way, the Sinai Peninsula is a unique and amazing place. At least you can start with a place: Sinai is the border between Asia and Africa, and the peninsula itself is part of the Asian continent.

Its nature is also unique. Most people don’t live in the mountainous and desert areas of the Sinai, so the plants and animals have been kept in their original form. I haven’t heard of coral reefs or diving in local waters. Maybe only lazy people have told me about them.

Well, and of course, these places are very important for all people because of their historical and cultural significance. After all, this is where the Israelites wandered with Moses, and right away, the prophet received a message from God.

Fun things to do and see on the Sinai Peninsula

Of course, the Sinai Peninsula, like the rest of Egypt, is mostly known for its beautiful beaches, comfortable hotels, pretty good service, and, most importantly, its warm sea, which is full of sea life.

One gets the feeling that this is some kind of compensation for the fact that the land is both beautiful and boring. But even though it looks like a desert, there is a lot to see here.

Ras Abu Galum, Nabq, and Ras Mohammed are the three national parks on Sinai. For example, the latter is a nature reserve that has 5 ecosystems all at once!

The Sinai Peninsula is also known for its hot springs, which are a beautiful natural feature. The Sources of Moses are the most well-known of these. They were around when the story goes that Moses freed the Jews from slavery in Egypt.

After walking along the bottom of the Red Sea, they were tired, and many of them were suffering from thirst. The prophet then hit the ground several times with his staff, and water came pouring out from under the ground.

There are two other thermal baths about 100 km south of the Moses Springs. They are called the Pharaoh’s Baths and the Moses Baths.

The Colored Canyon is another unique thing to see on the Sinai Peninsula. It is only an hour’s drive from Nuweiba, which is a popular resort town.

What kind of place has a name like that?

The canyon is about 700 m long, and the gorge can get up to 100 m high at times. People who have always wanted to go to the moon will find this place very interesting.

The St. Catherine Monastery is, of course, the most important piece of history on the peninsula. The name of the Byzantine emperor Constantine the Great and his mother Helena are linked to how it looks.

In the year 330, a small church and a fort were built on Sinai to protect the monks from attacks by nomads. The first people who lived in the monastery didn’t have an easy time of things. They slept in caves, got their own food, and prayed a lot.

Also, the monks did a lot of missionary work, and over the course of several hundred years, they converted a large number of the people who lived on the Sinai Peninsula to Christianity.

By the way, the monastery didn’t show up here by accident. After all, Mount Sinai, where Moses received the ten commandments, is not too far away.

Sharm El-Sheikh is home to Ras Mohammed National Park.

Ras Mohammed National Park is a place for conservation. It was Egypt’s first national park when it opened in 1989, and the country is very proud of it. It was made to protect the species of plants and animals that live there, as well as their natural growth.

The park is 480 square kilometres in size, and more than two-thirds of that is water. The park’s land is made up of two islands: Tiran and Sanafir.

Ras Mohammed National Park, also called “Cape of Mohammed,” is in the south of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25 km southwest of Sharm el-Sheikh. It is on the coast of the Red Sea. Some of the best places to snorkel in the world are in the southernmost part. Corals that are about two billion years old can be found in the park.

Lake of Desires and Salt Lake are two very different lakes in the park. The water in the first one is partially salt-free because it comes from fresh springs that bubble up from the ground. The second lake is fed by unique salt springs, so its water is twice as salty as the sea.

Turtles, weird fish like Napoleon fish, butterflyfish, and angelfish, and a lot of other species make up the underwater world. Reefs start 6 metres from the water’s edge, and their colours and variety make them look like fairy-tale forests. Coral fish of amazing beauty live in these reefs, such as hedgehog fish, parrotfish, etc., as well as starfish, sea urchins, sea lilies, seahorses, stingrays, barracuda, and even sharks.

There are many birds, including migratory birds, gazelles, foxes, hyenas, reptiles, and other animals that live on land in the reserve.

Mangroves are very important to the park. Geological rocks are another good thing about the reserve.

About 50,000 tourists visit Ras Mohammed National Park every year, and that number is growing as the Sinai region becomes more popular.

Be sure to look at the mangroves, whose roots are covered with a thick layer of dried salt because they have adapted to living in saltwater. They don’t look like much, but their strong will to live is admirable. Visit the Magic Bay, which is almost as salty as the Dead Sea.

People believe that the salt and mud in the bay are good for you and that souvenirs made from them are sold in the reserve. They also believe that if you dive into the water head first and make a wish, your wish will come true, and that you can’t take a picture of a magical place from space. There are plenty of things to do, so just take your time and look around. Then, if you’re lucky, you might be able to see animals and birds that live in the reserve.

Strong underwater currents make it dangerous to snorkel near some of Ras Mohammed’s reefs. Of course, you should pay attention to what local dive masters say.

The coral reefs in the reserve are truly amazing. They look like seamounts with a big flat top and cliffs off in the distance that you can’t see.

No matter which dive site you choose—Eel Garden, Anemone City (just a blooming garden at a depth of 14 m! ), Yolanda Reef, Shark Reef, Shark Observatory, or one of the other amazing natural creations in the park—the underwater world will blow you away.

If you want to avoid cutting yourself, it’s best to go down with your shoes on. If you want to see as many fish as possible living between the corals, it’s best to go diving in the afternoon, when the number of tourists has died down a bit.

Here in the reserve, you can rent gear, or you can order your own set when you buy a tour. When someone goes diving for the first time, they will get a special certificate. And anyone who has been underwater in Ras Mohammed will have seen a truly amazing and one-of-a-kind sight.

Summers are very hot, and it’s not unusual for the temperature to reach 40°C during the day. The water is a pleasant 24°C to 26°C, though. With a salinity of 4.1%, the water is quite salty.

The Nabq National Park is a 600-square-kilometer beach area with the best sand and a 4-kilometer-long mangrove forest.

The trees are perfectly suited to the climate and the salty water. The park is 35 km northeast of Sharm El-Sheikh city and has a lot to offer in terms of plants and animals. You get to see nature that hasn’t been touched and is safe, with a dreamlike background.

Here, the plants and animals are full of colour. There are 143 plant species and a lot of animal species. Gazelles, ibex, and a wide range of insects and reptiles can be seen in their natural habitat.
